Football

Football had been played at Crookhall for over 50 years up to 1976. Crookhall Colliery Welfare Juniors were one of the most respected junior teams in County Durham during the fifties and sixties.  The Foundation worked hard to redevelop the playing fields in Crookhall and in August 2013 competitive football once again took place in the village after a gap of 40 years when Consett Station Club started to play in the Sunday morning league.

The first game was a very emotional one as we held a minutes silence in advance of the game for John ‘Beck’ Dixon our founder who sadly died before being able to witness the return of football. The game involved the Station Club Fc versus Chopwell Officials with the Station recording a 7-1 victory. Our thanks went to Councillor Jane Brown for helping to fund the improvements to the playing surface and the provision of goalposts and the initial marking out of the pitch

Action from 1st Game Station Club FC v Chopwell Officials

After spending two seasons playing at Crookhall the Station Club Team were successful in gaining promotion and reluctantly decided to move to a larger pitch in Consett .

We did not have a team playing from Crookhall in 2015. However Crookhall Foundation Sports sponsored a team from Delves Lane.

In February 2016 training commenced for an Under 6’s and an Under 7’s team who started playing competitively in March. They play under the name Crookhall Beck Juniors Red and Blue (after Red Row and Blue Row two former streets within the village). These then developed to and Under 7’s and two Under 8’s teams. Thanks go again to Chris Shield for his hard work and dedication in getting the teams up and running. The first season saw a mixture of results as the but overall the season went well and all of the children gained experience and developed. The Assistant Secretaries were delighted to be asked to present the medals and awards at the end of season presentation evening for Crookhall Foundation Sports. A great evening was had celebrating the first season for the two teams and recognising all of the hard work by both coaches and players alike. Evening rounded off with children and adults sumo which was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to the teams for their hard work last season may it continue in the coming season.

A proud coach with his team in their first ever tournament

Whilst we started the season with an adults team Crookhall Beck FC based at Crookhall on the enlarged pitch this was short lived as the teams ceased playing mid season and left the league.

2017 has seen the children move up age groups we still have Crookhall Beck Reds and Blues Under 8’s and also an Under 9’s team who have all played very well and achieved some great results.  All of the teams have also received Charter Status from the FA. Thanks go to all of the coaches who continue to develop the teams. We have an ethos of enjoyment and team work being more important than results and aim to give every child training and playing the best experience. Assistant Secretaries once again made the presentations at the end of season event which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Sadly in 2019 the adult football team decided to relocate to another pitch as we are unable to find a replacement team we decided to maintain the field as a community space to enable local residents to use the space for recreation. The junior team is still active playing their games at Blackhill.

Following the relocation of the adult team the changing facilities were removed from the field on 9 June 2020 and donated to Consett Rugby Club.

August 2020 – Preparation of Pitch for new season and new team

Following an agreement that Delves Lane Pheonix JFC would be calling Becks Park home starting with the 2020/21 season the team made arrangements for works to be carried out to harrow the pitch and re-mark the pitch lines. This was made possible thanks to work by Jackie and Paul Haggan from the team and the excellent work was completed by Christian Selkirk of North East Grass Management.
